ACTIVITIES - LOCAL

BEACHES, SWIMMING, SURFING, WINDSURFING

BENNETT’S (HAWKS NEST) BEACH is suitable for swimming where it is patrolled weekends and school holidays during the summer. Swell suitable for bodysurfing. Some sections are open to 4WD access.

JIMMY’S BEACH stretches 5km from Yacaaba Headland to the mouth of the Myall River within Port Stephens and is the ideal place for kids as it is sheltered from winds and has no surf. The western end is popular for snorkelling and further out is ideal for wind-surfing.

BOATING

If paddling under your own steam isn’t your style, then try the motorised version of getting around. Again BYO or hire.

CANOEING & KAYAKING

The Myall River and lakes are the ideal place for a paddle. Use you own craft, hire from one of the many craft hire businesses or take a guided tour with Larry from Lazy Paddles where all the equipment plus local knowledge is provided.

CYCLING ... go anywhere you like, just don’t forget your helmet!

DOLPHIN WATCH cruises run all year round with a 99% chance of seeing dolphins at play in Port Stephens. Boom net rides and a ferry service to Nelson Bay are also available.

FISH from the beach, off the wharf, from the “tinnie” … it’s your choice. Deep sea and Reef fishing is also available … with a license of course!

GOLF. Hawks Nest boasts one of the finest golf courses on the coast. Bookings are essential.

SNORKELLING & DIVING. There are many first class areas to suit all levels of ability.

WALKING TRACKS vary in difficulty from gentle strolls to steep climbs and include the Tea Gardens Walk, Yacaaba Headlands, Winda Woppa peninsula, Mungo Brush rainforest, Little Gibber, Tamboy boardwalks.

WHALE WATCHING tours run when whales are migrating north (July) or returning to the South (October) with their calves.

Visit the local Visitors Information Centre for up-to-date information including tide times, etc.
